Method of Survival

So far I have successfully mocked my fellow government employees, trivial venus envy, classic male-family entrenched egos, and then indulged in an emotional discourse, reaking of typical feminine feelings (helplessness, guilt, sympathy etc.). Well now the time has come for me to go back to mocking, and this time mock somebody totally unexpected..ME! So, here it goes:

While returning to Kuwait from a business trip last year, I was seated next to a very attractive young man in First Class. He was sharply dressed in an immaculate suit, his skin was a delicious cocoa bronze with a tint of redness, and his eyes were fiery green with black eye lashes as sharp as swords. He was hot. I guessed he would be south american, or maybe sicilian (but he didn't have the curly hair), or maybe a mix of both. Turns out the man was Indian (who would have thought!), a Harvard Suma Cum Laud, and wasn't coming to Kuwait on business. My curiousity was piqued to say the least:
CD: So why on earth are you coming to kuwait?
Hot Indian Harvard Guy: I come to kuwait to party.

I needed about 5 minutes to register that sentence, and then another 2 minutes to recover from the surprise, and five more to formulate a semi decent response:
CD: oh.. you have friends in Kuwait that you party with?
Hot Indian Harvard Guy: Yes, I met them from my days in Boston. I know (a famous Kuwaiti person) and (another famous Kuwaiti person) and (a bigtime Kuwaiti jackpot). (Bigtime Kuwaiti jackpot) throws great parties in his yatch at this time of year, with always the best entertainers.

I thought about offering to show Hot Indian Harvard Guy around Kuwait but I realized it was pointless, he was in the hands of much more glamourous people that throw parties with fire shows and human statues and actually, this is not the point of my post! The point is that I too, would like to indulge in some partying every now and then, I mean I'm young, I'm single, and I want to do what I used to do when I was in college, which is to have some fun. But because I'm in kuwait, I automatically have to put up the "I'm holier than thou" front so that everyone will think of me as the 'sweet girl from highschool' they endearingly remember. And as much as I get tempted to tiptoe out of my house in the wee hours of the morning to a roaring party, there is always a nagging fear that I might run into Oppressive Cousin or a member of his clan that will surely deliver the gossip. Besides, its not really worth to risk my untarnished (at least in my belief) reputation to be in the company of people who ultimately won't even respect me. So my decision was to maintain a low profile at all times, and just not socialise out of the limits of cultural propriety defined by soceity & traditional convention.
The way I rectified wild urges, depression, and creeping temptations is by travelling. Everytime I get invited to a hot party, I make it a point to travel to another country. That way, I don't feel like I'm missing out on a great experience, heck, I'm in another city with far more excitement, so there! It also feels kinda fabulous to turn down an invitation by saying "sorry, dear, can't come, I'll be in London at the time (or Paris, or Nyc, or Dubai..whatever destination affordable at the moment). This technique has obviously diluted my resources, but it saved me from possible mental instability.

Now the time has come where I am yet again invited to a great post Eid party, the attendees of which will probably mostly be expats, but I'm still not willing to risk being spotted. So now I am about to spend fifty percent of what I earned this month on a trip out of Kuwait for 5 days to avoid feeling sorry for myself. We all have our sneaky methods of survival, don't we?

OK..that's it...Unless you've been living in my head all those years...I feel like I'm reading my own thoughts!...with the one exception that I sometimes can't resist the urge and end up going to some party only to feel like crap afterwards 'coz the word fun never shows up! I'm too busy worrying about the whole thing and judging everyone while they judge me and end up feeling like a hypocrite...no fun in that...so sadly sticking to your travelling seems like the best option...but then again expatraites have good parties without the guilt trip..you can always wear a wig...and if that sounds too weird...trust me...I've done that and it was so much fun..I actually put a Marlyn Monroe wig on and blue contact lens...the party sucked but I had fun being disguised...!! The things we do to have fun around here!!!OMG!

This is the part that has caused me to literally be in tears while I am typing this very second. I hope your happy with yourself CD! You hit the nail right on the head.

I swear to God, all this worry, caution, guilt and plain party-pooping better be worth it in the end!

I've never been to a party before!

*sob* *sob*

MissCosmo: I like your idea, still too chicken to do it.

*sigh*

I really know what you're talking about. Seriously. I'm enjoying my fun here (for the time being) and I seriously don't know what I'm going to do when I go back home for good. Last Christmas, I spent about a month and of course, I had a blast with my family and friends and such, but in the end, there was nothing to do. It was the first time that I felt how incredibly tiny Kuwait is. Actually, the whole damn world is too small, hence the tip-toeing around town dressed as Morticia for Halloween.

D.R,
habibti, trust me its not worth it. But we still definitely have to do it. So, whats your method of survival?

Erz.
Enjoy it as much as you can. Seriously, have a ball.

Sailor,
It depends which exact institution, and even within the institution it depends which department. Generally the overall opinion is that its SHIT, but my job & department is kinda cool, so I ain't complainin' (except about the people I work with).

McArabian,
I love your idea. But I still would be weary about the whole thing...

DR I don't have a method...I have to admit I'm very strong willed when it comes to something I haven't done before, but if I do something once...khalaaaaaas am9ikh'ha!
I agree that it isn't worth it, but what to do? The guilt! I wish I could go back to the blissful years when I had no fear or guilt.

ok...I just past by to see what's the verdict on the party scene problem...I like the mcarabian idea...but you'd have to be sooo exclusive..i.e. you'd have to base it on trust...and that only happens after experience...so how about you try it out for a year and then come back to us and let us know if all those involved stuck to their words!..:)

Oy Vey! You guys are killing me! I want to adopt you each and be your partypal. Not growing up in this culture or with the same values and traditions, it's hard to understand sometimes what you guys go through and how much reputation really means in your circles.

I'm not party-crazy by anymeans, and most of my friends think I need to loosen up. However, that once a month occasion that I really let loose and be as goofy and silly and stupid and fun and crazy as I want to? Those times are a hedonistic heyday but they NEVER have had a negative impact on my regular day to day life.

I worked at a company where we had regular company parties and all levels of employees and bosses attended. Agree or not, what happened at a party stayed at a party and the next day it was business as usual. You can gain alot of respect for someone (or at least begin to like someone a little more) by seeing them outside the societal constrictions we live by daily. Seeing them as just another human needing some fun.

When I go back to the states I will sponsor each of you anytime for an all out party-till-you-puke-and-party-some-more fun fest. Anytime, anyplace you want! You guys carry a heavy burden.

Thank you,

kisartai kha6ri :(

bess believe u me, partying in Kuwait is all about whos the host, and who you're with. My rule of thumb is that if i do not know the hosts for atleast 20 years, i will not go, and if i do, i make sure i am with refqa sal7a (a minimum of 3 cousins, 3 best friends and their husbands, & 3 friends who my parents knew since i was 7)

At Sunday, 30 October, 2005, Blogger Sheba said...

oh a rule of thumb:

if the host is a guy and his sisters are not invited, then you do not go.

Another rule of thumb:

Expat parties have some Kuwaities who are hiding for good reason (they probably lead a double life or double standards). And some of these parties get busted by the police!
