cultural reform in qatar

I was rushing to the airport in Qatar on a sunny afternoon, and to heighten my state of panic, every single street was blocked by police. Traffic was insane, and the taxi didn't know which street to take!

"Good grief, what is going on in Qatar" I asked the cab driver.
"George Bush is in town" he muttered.
" No he was here last week. And they didn't shut down any streets." I pedantically told him.
"Well it must be someone really important then" he replied
"Who could be more important than George Bush. I don't think so".

My curiousity was piqued. I asked every single person in the airport what was going on in Doha, why were all the streets blocked.
Well, ladies and Gentelman, it turns out that the day I was leaving Qatar was the "national bicycles day"
Yep, thats right. Everyone was out riding their bicycles including the amazing Shiekha Moza and her daughters.

I think I want to live in Qatar now.

Ah, stuff like this makes me feel all fuzzy about having a bunch of Qatari genes in me, along with the coolest, most holistic, rockingly new age, enlightened and funky, munakibba Qatari aunties...

And I agree with you about Qatar's future in comparison to our own. I think it's safe to say that for Kuwait, 6afetna il-qe6aar on the most part whereas Qatar rides up front in the engineers compartment.

Ms. B,
I was really impressed with the new wave of well-educated and versatile qatari women.
I met a young 15 year old girl that went to volunteer in Indonesia for a week with a whole bunch of other students in her school -the trip was sponsored by the government as they are trying instill the spirit of community service in all the highschools. Just watch how the Qataris are goin to be 10 years from now, the level of intellectual culture in their soceity is thriving and the country itself is beatiful. I really loved it. I loved the people.

The first thing that came to my mind was the incident with Marie Antoinette in the french revolution when she said to her servants to give the rioting mob some biscuits.

Blocking traffic to have a bicycle day seems a little counter-productive don't you think?

I tried riding my bike to the jam3iyah, everyone tried to drive me off the road, so I had to drive on the wrong side just to see the cars rushing towards me.

I am a retired American English teacher living in Thailand. One of my former students in Jeddah said you were a great writer - you have fans, it seems. I wish you could post pictures, but I guess that's not allowed. I have a blog at Chonchai.blogspot.com. Should you like to talk about writing, drop me a line. Forrest

Hope you are now in Doha married to a dashing, philanthropic, erudite, Princeton educated, enlightened, sporty and fun Qatari Sheikh, and are adding your own singular and inimitably wonderful touch to Qatari society and culture as you go on your way to out-Sheikha Moza-ing even Sheikha Moza herself ;)

(missing you CD :* )
