webs of indecision

When I was a little girl, I really wanted to be a dancer.
In middle school, I decided I wanted to be a writer.
In highschool, I found a passion in issues of injustice and was very adamant about being a lawyer.

In college, I wanted to be a film maker as well as a musuem curator!

Now I am none of these things, but I still harbor a strong desire in all of the aforementioned careers -as well as many others!

How do you figure out what you really passionately and deeply want out of your life?
And if you return to the real non artsy world, how would you explain your one year 'experimentation' gap on your resume?

What you really and passionately want...well, I think you should 1- make time for it and 2- just GO for it. This is coming from a fantastic procrastinator so...
Experimentation gap...well, I think ballsy people dig themselves out of the conformist hole and throw themselves into their passion, whatever that is. I think it shows that one is willing to take risks based on their gut instinct and if it went well, well good for them. If not, they learn from it and move on to something better.

You Know, I still don't know what I want...& I think there's nothing wrong with it..Sometimes I wished I were a Surgeon, meteorologist, fire fiter, ect..and right now I think: Why haven't I been a POLICEWOMAN?

We're here to experiment different things until we figure out what we really want to do..It takes a very long time if you want to try out different things..There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that because this is what makes us more interesting.

'The one year gap on your resume to do something artsy you are passionate about'...

HIGH FIVE

You don't need to explain yourself because you are balancing your life - takin your time.

TYT BABY!

mhh..

I think there are tons of people who don't seem to feel inspired or creative at their workplace. I was surprised to learn how many "pro-amatures" there are out there, in film-making, webdesign, writing, etc.

These are creative individuals who take up filma-making, writing, etc as a hobby.. and they seem to excel.

One great example is Vincent Lam. He is an Emergency Physician who won the the 2006 Giller Prize for Literary Fiction. He said he always wanted to be a writer but never found the time inbetween medical school and whatnot. The book is now being adapted to become a TV Series.

Imagine that!

Anything is possible. Education should not cost more than the price of a book and the will to learn. I am sure you can be any of those and still keep your day job. :)

Well if I were actually faced with having to make the difficult choice between several things I would pray isti5ara. But otherwise, some people go through their lives never knowing what their passion is or even if they have one. I say stick to reality and a job that can more or less guarantee you a salary (because that's a safety net that's important to have in a person's life) and everything else you can try on the side and at your leisure. For example:
Dancer: go to the dance classes at Flex
Writer: you write here so you're already doing that, you can also try to get a part time gig at one of the English newspapers or Bazaar
Lawyer: join one of the politically active groups, it gives you a lot of exposure to the legal system here

wa hallumma jarra :D

To have many interests means you are simply a passionate person. I suggest finding one focused career or activity that combines as many of your passions as possible. Good luck
