Though I’m deeply sorry for what Rihanna went through, I’m glad that the issue of domestic violence is back in the limelight and many media outlets are exposing it as a common mean of oppression. I don’t watch/read Oprah, and I do not know why you chose that specific qquote to highlight (perhaps she emphasized it?) but its true, women believe in false ideals of love, and they believe that love can domesticate violent men, so women fall back into this everlasting cycle of physical and emotional abuse. Have you heard about the recent poll where they found that about 50% of teenagers view fights and all sorts of abuse as a normal and expected issue of a relationship…what the fuck? Seriously, what kind of world do we live in that we became so insensitive to the most basic human right: security! To bring this subject more locally, what can an abused woman do in Kuwait? They all stay silent. Everyone is so obsessed with preserving their family’s reputation that they get blinded by the bigger harm that they’re facing. then we wonder why men continue to molest their young cousins, rape their nieces and beat their girlfriends/wives. We are all complicit in our own subordination. Idiots. Let a few days pass, and all of us will put violence against women (and children) back in that dark corner in the depths of our consciousness, cause that’s how we deal :)
